TC 2019: Successful anniversary event

Touristik & Caravaning in Leipzig closes on a successful note – Great satisfaction among visitors and exhibitors

Touristik & Caravaning (TC) was staged this year for the thirtieth time at the Leipzig Trade Fair Centre. The anniversary edition of Central Germany's largest travel fair left the exhibitors satisfied and the visitors happy. "We were able to offer our visitors a varied exhibition programme and were also successful in integrating new ideas," said Guido von Vacano, a member of the Board of Management of Messe Stuttgart, which organised the travel fair for the second time.

67,000 visitors came to the Leipzig Trade Fair Centre from 20 to 24 November to obtain information from 531 exhibitors about their next holiday or to gain advice on purchasing a leisure vehicle. It was awarded a 1.7 (a good academic grade in Germany), which is testimony to its satisfied visitors, 95 per cent of whom said they would recommend the event to friends and acquaintances. Around one third of visitors travelled over 100 kilometres to attend the exhibition.

Wanderlust among visitors

Keen travellers found any number of inspirations and offers in Hall 4, whether related to specific tour arrangements or organised group holidays – abroad or in Germany. Andrea Borlotti from Trentino Marketing was delighted with the outcome of the exhibition: "By participating in Touristik & Caravaning, we have been able to significantly increase our level of recognition in the exhibition's catchment area over the last few years. We have also found that the organisation of the exhibition has become more professional over the past two years. The glass hall has also seen positive development. People come to the exhibition well-informed and remember Trentino. We are already planning on taking part in TC again in 2020."

José Ramírez-Santoyo from the Malaysian Tourist Office, which took part in TC for the first time, also had positive things to say: "We are really very satisfied. We were highly surprised that so many people are interested in Malaysia and Borneo. Our information material went down very well and we got lots of people excited about Malaysia."

Regional excursion destinations and attractions in the "Sachsenplatz" area, including the homeland experience of the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) as this year's partner region, were showcased for the first time. Karsten Gräning, Deputy Managing Director of the Erzgebirge Tourist Association, drew positive conclusions: "TC 2019 was a fantastic event. We and our 17 co-exhibitors on the Erzgebirge stand were pleased with the high number of visitors and the excellent organisation by Messe Stuttgart.
We represented the Erzgebirge region very well and celebrated gaining the title UNESCO World Heritage region with many visitors on Friday on the Erzgebirge Day." Felicitas Remmert, Managing Director of the Association Garden dreams – historical parks in Saxony-Anhalt, also said that its appearance at the exhibition was successful: "We were very satisfied with TC. The organisation beforehand and the local support were excellent. The visitors were very interested in gardens in Saxony-Anhalt as day trip destinations. We are happy to have taken part."

The bike and outdoor section also went down well with visitors. They were able to test different models on the large bike course. Advice regarding e-bikes on the TC stage also proved very popular. They could also test e-scooters on a separate course. The cruise section featured shipping companies, travel agencies and tour operators, who sparked peoples' interest in water-based holidays during their talks on the cruise stage. "We have come to Leipzig on numerous occasions. This time, we had a very nice stand opposite the stage, where we also provided some talks. There was great interest in our polar trips. I am pleased to see that the visitors in Leipzig are very keen on details. We will definitely come back again
next year. Overall, a very successful exhibition," said Mike Domnik, Stand Manager at the tour operator IKARUS TOURS / PolarNEWS.

Keen interest in camping and caravaning

Visitors were impressed by the comprehensive market overview and the range of equipment and accessories in the caravaning section. In addition to the wide selection of vehicles, which ranged from luxury liners through to compact box vans, "van life" was also represented for the first time with experts on site: in the blogger lounge, influencers reported on living and working in a van, and gave travel talks which put people in the mood for going on holiday in a minibus.

Manufacturers and retailers presented more than 70 different brands in Halls 3 and 5. They said they were happy that the visitors were interested in obtaining information and making purchases. Bernd Wuschack, Sales, Marketing and Service Director of the Carthago Group: "We love coming to Leipzig because TC has gained much more recognition in the last few years. This year, we were happy to exhibit on two occasions in Leipzig because we are welcoming two anniversaries: 30 years of travel freedom for east Germany and 40 years of mobile homes from Carthago. In line with this, our owner-operated company group was an integral part of the official tour with its two brands Carthago and Malibu. This was a great honour for us. Above all, we sensed a keen interest among visitors and concluded some substantial sales transactions. We are therefore going home satisfied and will come back again next year with our brands."

Holger Schulz, Managing Director of Hobby-Wohnwagenwerk Ing. Harald Striewski GmbH, is reflecting on a successful exhibition: "We always love coming to Leipzig and look forward to seeing our loyal commercial partners and customers who have supported us throughout the years. Leipzig has been a very successful exhibition for our company right from the start and it generates great interest among customers across all age groups. In the mobile home section, our two new entry series Optima Ontour and Optima Ontour Edition did particularly well this year.
Fully equipped and with a top price-performance ratio, these models impressed our hobbyist customers. In terms of caravans, the family models were very popular again."

TC also proved successful for the camper rental service Roadsurfer : "The exhibition was amazing this year. We met fantastic visitors and there was also a great sense of community among exhibitors. Business went very well: we will definitely come back again," said Ronny Mehler. Not only long-standing exhibitors, but also first-time exhibitors like Dani Matias, who is responsible for sales at Tourne Mobil from Slovenia, were satisfied: "We were here in Leipzig for the first time and were very surprised by the great event organisation. We were pleased with the positive personal contacts we made and will definitely come back again next year."

The visitors also showed a great deal of interest in the accessories and technology sections.
Nils Ihsen, Sales Manager for Leisure Vehicles at the accessory manufacturer Thule: "We liked being in Leipzig because we reached a wide range of visitors and had some great discussions. It was especially interesting to see that a large number of customers from the northern area of Bavaria also visited our stand. All in all, it was very positive for us. We will come back again next year."

The visitors went on a pleasurable journey through the glass hall: the long tables invited them to linger a while and treats from all over the world were sampled on the stands.
"I was very impressed by the size and organisation of the exhibition. The support from beginning to end was superb, I will gladly come back again," said Detlef Werner from the Henningsdorf mobile smokehouse.

Trade visitor programme further extended

Trade visitors from the tourism and caravaning industries were also greeted with an informative programme in Leipzig. The Motorhome Site Meeting, award presentations by the Caravaning magazine and the German Camping Club, and the political tour of the exhibition sparked a great deal of interest. "It was also important for us to further expand our program alongside our trade visitor offering. We are pleased to have made further steps in this direction this year," said Alexander Ege, Team Director for TC. New features included the Cruise Academy, which was organised by FVW Medien, and the special event "ZukunftSchmiede live" of the Saxony Regional Tourist Association.

The next TC Leipzig will be held from 18 to 22 november 2020.
