"Our main priority is to be always one step ahead"

endox Feinwerktechnik GmbH has been on a growth path for years. In an interview Managing Director Matthias Hernik explains how the company is counteracting the shortage of skilled workers and what special challenges he sees for component manufacturers in medical technology in future.

We are delighted that your company, endox Feinwerktechnik GmbH, will be exhibiting at the new medical technology trade fair T4M. What prompted you to make this decision?

We are a medical company located here in the region and use the Stuttgart Trade Fair Centre, so to speak, for our in-house trade fair. After we exhibited at Medtec for many years, the location of Stuttgart is also one reason why we opted for T4M. Our customers and suppliers expect to see us here. We also hope that Messe Stuttgart, as the organiser, will provide the necessary know-how and the right focus.

When you look at the future of medical technology, what special challenges will component manufacturers like your company face in the next few years?

As an OEM and PLM manufacturer, we have higher costs, e.g. for the approval of new products, on account of the new requirements in the Medical Device Regulation (MDR). This involves higher personal requirements and rising costs. If the currently very strict requirements of the MDR do not change, we fear that the innovative capacity in Germany might suffer as a result in the long term.

At endox you attach great importance to the fulfilment of specific customer requests. What current developments/ products are in great demand at present?

One of our key competencies is that we can react to customer-specific requirements. Keyhole surgery is in demand and still harbours a great deal of potential which we utilise with every individual customer inquiry. Our main priority is to be always one step ahead.

You are an innovative manufacturer of medical technology or precise apparatus – what can visitors to your exhibition stand look forward to in May 2019?

We will present our innovative guide wire portfolio and new products for urology.

Since it was founded in 2001, endox Feinwerktechnik GmbH has grown continuously. At the beginning there were only 3 people and you now have a workforce of more than 90 employees. You are also currently building a new production and administration centre in Dettingen an der Erms. Is the widely discussed shortage of skilled workers a topic in your company? If so, how are you resolving this problem?

We owe the success of our company to the competence of every individual employee. As our company expands, the demand for qualified specialists also increases. We are therefore always looking for such people. In addition to an attractive salary, we try our best to provide an excellent work environment. The production and administration centre will contain modern workstations, a new canteen and a relax lounge for our employees. We also attach great importance to an even work-life balance with family-friendly working hours, e.g. through the one-shift service.

Let's look into the future once again – but the near future this time. When can you say in May 2019 that your attendance at T4M was a success?

The objectives of our participation in the trade fair are to make potential customers aware of our company, lay the foundations for new business relationships and further advance endox Feinwerktechnik.
