LASYS 2020 „the place to be(am)“ - Interview

16.04.2019 - 11:40

Interview with Prof. Thomas Graf, Director of the Institute for Radiation Tools (IFSW) at Stuttgart University and organiser of the Stuttgart Laser Days

Knowledge transfer at LASYS: Every two years, the combination of trade fair and top-quality accompanying programme brings together experts from industry and science in Stuttgart. A firm fixture of the fair is the Stuttgart Laser Days, which will take place for the eleventh time in 2020. The congress facilitates an efficient transfer of knowledge with its visionary plenary sessions and top-class expert lectures. The fair and congress form a fruitful symbiosis. We interviewed Prof. Thomas Graf, Director of the Institute for Radiation Tools (IFSW) at Stuttgart University and organiser of the congress.

1. What is the current focus of your work?

"Having completed my almost six-year term as prorector for knowledge and technology transfer and local inspections in the middle of March to evaluate Stuttgart University's University of Excellence application, I will be concentrating more fully again on revising the "Laser in der Fertigung [Lasers in Production]" textbook. It requires reviewing in the light of the many advances in the field of laser-based material processing in recent years, and this applies to all processes. The areas most subject to close review are welding, drilling and material removal."

2. Can you give us an idea of the topics for the Stuttgart Laser Days 2020 (SLT 2020)?

"In the research field at the moment, in welding and also in additive processes, the main focus is on material flows. In material-removing processes, developments are picking up speed thanks to the rapid increases in ultra-short pulse laser performance, which also involve major system-related challenges. These are all topics that will hold the stage at the SLT 2020."

3. Why is LASYS a suitable platform for you to stage the Stuttgart Laser Days?

"In their current form, both the Stuttgart Laser Days and LASYS developed out of the earlier Stuttgart Laser Days organised by the Institute for Radiation Tools (IFSW), held on the premises of Stuttgart University. They simply belong together and complement each other perfectly. Not least due to the excellent cooperation with Messe Stuttgart and an ideal sharing of tasks, we have now become much more professional and attractive as an event."
