The best CMT of all time23.01.2020 - 12:06
The CMT has confirmed its impressive status as the world's largest consumer show for tourism and leisure: "Over the course of nine days, we are thrilled to have welcomed around 300,000 visitors to our exhibition grounds and a total of 2161 exhibitors. An absolute record!" said Roland Bleinroth, President of Messe Stuttgart, as CMT 2020 drew to a close.
Guido von Vacano, Member of the Executive Board, added: "The CMT has evolved brilliantly. We have extended our range of services and enhanced the profile of the tourism and caravanning sectors, captivating our visitors." We have even greater variety in the caravanning equipment sector and the focus on "van life", new and attractive tourist destinations, an accompanying programme with over 600 events as well as successful subsidiary shows such as "Cycling and hiking holidays", "Golf and wellness holidays" and "Cruises and ship travel" – the key to success according to von Vacano.
Accompanying programme with over 600 events
The significantly broadened programme for trade visitors is another success factor.
The new "CMTbusiness" platform offered over 40 events for trade visitors. Whether it's fvw Destination Germany Day, Travel Market, the pitch and marina summit or the coach tourism conference – the special CMT programme attracted 33,000 trade visitors to Stuttgart. The Outdoor Award Baden-Württemberg was awarded for the second time. Twenty tourist attractions from across the state applied and the winners were honoured at the trade fair – the association Trailsurfers Baden-Württemberg, the tour operator Cojote Outdoor and the tourist association Mythos Schwäbische Alb for their canyoning tours in the Falkenstein cave.
CMT partners proved very popular
The CMT partners this year were very satisfied. For Montenegro, the partner country, this year's CMT partnership has been "the perfect opportunity to introduce ourselves," said Dušanka Pavićević, Deputy Director of the National Tourism Organisation of Montenegro, who expressed her gratitude for the "excellent organisation and support from the CMT team." "We are completely satisfied!"
Also pleased was Martin Knauer, the press contact for tourism marketing in Baden-Württemberg, this year's CMT outdoor partner.
The aim of "CMT special – The Wild South" at the trade fair was to "surprise our guests with what we have here in the wild south and we succeeded in this. We got great feedback on this topic." Not least thanks to an "enormous media response", CMT 2020 was a "wonderful start to the year."
Arne Mellert, Managing Director at the Baden-Württemberg spa association was of a similar opinion: "Initially it took a bit of getting used to the idea of being a CMT partner in the caravanning sector, but indeed it was a decision we will never regret. The CMT provided us with a platform to reach an audience we would never otherwise have reached."
The caravanning industry also carried over the economic upturn from the successful previous year into CMT 2020. According to the experts, Stuttgart has confirmed its role as a barometer for the mobile home and caravan industry. The CMT has proven itself to be a "magnet" for industry representatives from all over Europe, according to Holger Siebert, Vice President and board member responsible for public relations for the caravanning industry association CIVD. The CMT has been an economic "success". Oliver Waidelich, Managing Director at the German caravanning trade association DCHV, said: "A strong buying interest was expressed at the trade fair, which radiated into the trade missions."
He is expecting "further growth." "The CMT has confirmed that this future vision is justified. The trade fair was a real success for all parties involved!"
Nationwide interest at a high level
The visitors to the exhibition appreciated the extensive accompanying programme and the diverse offerings at the fully booked up Stuttgart Trade Fair Centre. They awarded CMT a "B" grade. It is therefore not surprising that 92% of surveyed visitors said they were intending to return to the exhibition in 2021. And 96% said they would also recommend CMT to friends and relatives. The visitors stayed at CMT for an average of almost five hours in order to obtain information from the exhibitors and look at the 1200 exhibited vehicles. More than 25% of visitors travelled a distance of more than 100 kilometres to Stuttgart, with 9% of visitors coming from Bavaria alone.
The camper site and the additional parking areas in the "CMT motel" were also highly frequented: The fair registered a record number of 8000 vehicles parked overnight.
Special exhibitions at CMT in great demand
Exhibitors at the special exhibitions "Golf and wellness holidays" and "Cruises and ship travel", which were held on the second weekend from Thursday to Sunday, were also very pleased with the outcome of the event. Around 250 companies presented their innovations and product ranges for the 2020 golf and holiday year in Hall 9. They almost unanimously agreed that not only was the number of visitors encouragingly high, but also their "expertise", i.e. their specific interest and the willingness to make bookings. Otto Leibfritz, President of the Baden-Württemberg Golf Association observed that both exhibitions on the four CMT days attracted a large number of interested and well-informed visitors: "We again found a significant increase in interest. The visitors were very well informed, we proved to be very popular and are also very happy with the number of visitors. This trade fair and the organisation are the best in this field. We will in future attempt to integrate even more clubs and will be back once again in 2021 – the date is firmly set in our diary."
Glenn Smart, Managing Director at SmartGolf Reisen: "We are exhibiting in Stuttgart for the second time and have doubled the size of our floor space after last year's success. We are therefore all the more surprised that this year has surpassed last year. We held good conversations with interested visitors and were pleased with the location. No doubt about it, we will definitely come back again next year." Stephanie Fitz from golfXtra by Invatarru GmbH: "Thanks to our experience, we have become the market leader for golfing holidays in South Africa. The four days of exhibitions were extremely positive and well attended. In particular, we were able to communicate with visitors on a one-on-one basis. The success is tangible, we will certainly be returning in 2021."
There was also a good atmosphere in the "Cruises and ship travel" section. Andrea Hendel, Head of Sales at Compagnie du Ponant, was very happy: "This is our sixth year at the exhibition and the first few days have already been very positive. We are especially excited about the high quality of our excellent visitors and appreciate the interesting discussions. We are still impressed by the concept of the exhibition and will return again next year." Roland Mössner, Member of the Executive Board at mm-Bootstouristik und Bootvermittlung: "We are thrilled and already planning for next year. The exhibition is organised brilliantly and the support from the exhibition team is impeccable."
Cycling holidays and hiking still on the upswing
The first CMT weekend focussed on cycling and hiking holidays. Cycling and hiking holidays are on the road to success and are becoming increasingly more popular. The 350 exhibitors were again able to see this for themselves. They praised the knowledgeable, interested visitors who asked specifically about current trends and undiscovered regions for hiking and cycling holidays, or enquired about the right accessories and suitable clothing.

Other exhibitor testimonies
Alexander Leopold, Chairman of the Board of Management, Dethleffs: "CMT 2020 has given Dethleffs an excellent start to the new year! We are excited about the huge rush of visitors. What was remarkable was the number of young families and couples visiting the Dethleffs stand with very set ideas, knowing exactly what they want to buy – an interesting target group for us, in many cases just starting to discover caravanning for themselves, and one we are aiming at specifically with our modern vehicle designs. Overall, it was a great start to the new caravanning season and an impressive confirmation of CMT as the most significant caravanning exhibition in the south."
Bernd Wuschack, Managing Director of Sales, Marketing and Customer Service, Carthago: "The Carthago group concluded that the CMT was extremely positive. Whether due to the number of visitors to the stands for our Carthago and Malibu brands, the strength of the relations or the number of deals secured – during the first weekend alone, we registered a further increase on last year's success. This positive impression has been reinforced throughout the duration of the exhibition and across all of our services. Our trade partners are now looking forward to successful post-fair business. One thing is certain: The CMT gave the Carthago group the perfect start to 2020."
Holger Schulz, Managing Director, Hobby: "This year's CMT is our most successful exhibition here in Stuttgart ever; what a fabulous way to start 2020! The high numbers of visitors and deals confirm that we are on the right track with our brand development at Hobby. We have generated a great deal of interest from customers of all ages and registered exceptionally high demand for our various family floor plans with children's beds."
Dr. Holger Siebert, Managing Director, Eura Mobil and Trigano Deutschland: "The core brand Eura Mobil, as a quality brand in the luxury category, has seen steeply rising sales, leading to several months of delivery periods as a result. The entry-level brand Forster has profited from the many new visitors, attracting the youngest buyers over all other motorhome brands thanks to its modern appearance and budget prices. Relocating the Karmann-Mobil van brand from the 'established' Hall 1 to the new 'Van Hall 10' was a great idea. The hall was well received by the visitors and the all-wheel drive arena, the highlight of the Karmann-Mobil stand was very popular."
Götz Rutenkolk, Managing Director, VanTourer: "We are extremely pleased with the visitors' knowledge and the influx of people. The Paul Horn Hall turned out to be an excellent platform for the topic of vans, as it is visited primarily by those already interested in the area. Especially a young, sporty crowd can recognise and appreciate the potential multi-purpose uses. All in all, it has been the most successful CMT we have ever had!"
Roland Beeh, Managing Director of Commercial Vehicles, Hahn Automobile: "CMT 2020 was even bigger and better than previous years, which also smashed one record after another. The topic of van life, summarised in Hall 10, was very well received. The demand for our current models remains consistently high and the number of enquiries is looking excellent. Halfway through the exhibition we had already reached a new sales record. The success of the exhibition this year proves that people are more than just interested in this type of holiday."
Christian Reisch, CEO, Alde Deutschland: "We are thrilled with our CMT appearance. The exhibition has become more and more important to us over the years, which is evident again this year thanks to the high number of visitors. We rate the advertising for CMT very highly.
Customers from our local region in Bavaria and also from Hamburg came to the stand. We recognised high levels of expertise in our visitors and will definitely return next year."
Nils Ihsen, Sales Manager for Leisure Vehicles, Thule: "We are really pleased with CMT 2020. We met such high-quality visitors and registered a record number of visitors to our stand. Not just in terms of quantity, the quality of the visitors was far higher than last year too. Next year, we will be back here at CMT with the same size stand, if not bigger."
Janine Bucha, Marketing Manager, Sunny Cars: "We are really pleased with how this year's CMT has gone for us. From the initial contact with the exhibition team right through to the final implementation stage, I couldn't have asked for more! The contact with customers was also brilliant: We had many interesting discussions and even completed some very comprehensive bookings. We are definitely coming back next time!"
Nadja Schliesser, Project Manager, Schwäbische Alb Tourismus e.V.: "The reception was phenomenal. We are really pleased and absolutely delighted with how this exhibition went. Our stand was packed right from the first day. You could sense that people were keen to explore the idea of 'staycations'. Many of our services were already well-known, in particular our route markers or the AlbCard."
Julia Döpp, Management Assistant, Explorer Reisen: "We were positively surprised: We received concrete enquiries on the Monday and Tuesday already and were able to make bookings right there in the exhibition. At the same time, while the exhibition was running, several visitors to the stand even made contact with our Stuttgart office. The CMT is the best and most important exhibition for us. Once again, we are really pleased!"
Risa Wardhani, Consul, Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia: "It was our first appearance at the CMT for our consulate. We had a great time and have thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Stuttgart. Each day we received more than 400 visitors to our stand – each one of them was very interested in our holiday offers, asked specific questions or shared their existing travel arrangements with us.
Our co-exhibitors were therefore also very busy. It was a great experience for us and we are really pleased!"
Susanne Schmidt, Stand Management, Namibia Tourism Board: "Namibia has been represented for two or three years and the information has been well received here. The exhibition went really well for our partners too. The majority of CMT visitors were interested, well informed and asked specific questions. People who live in Stuttgart and the surrounding areas are particularly affluent. I think we'll come again to the next CMT."
