Current trends, the latest innovations and visionary concepts for the hotel and gastronomy sectors were the focus of attention at INTERGASTRA from 15 to
19 February 2020. Together with GELATISSIMO and the IKA/Culinary Olympics, the leading trade fair for the hotel and gastronomy sectors showed that the heart of gastronomy beats in Stuttgart. With over 100,000 visitors from 75 countries and 1497 exhibitors (1422 in 2018) from 29 countries, the trade fair set new records.
"The renewed increase in visitors as well as exhibitors documents the position of INTERGASTRA as the most important platform for the hotel and gastronomy sectors in the German-speaking region. With the IKA/Culinary Olympics and more than 2000 competitors from over 70 nations, this year's INTERGASTRA was more international than ever before. Together, the two major events were able to increase their mutual appeal and attention within the industry even more,” says Stefan Lohnert, Managing Director of Messe Stuttgart.
Olympic Gold in Stuttgart
The IKA/Culinary Olympics celebrated its 25th anniversary at INTERGASTRA.
As the organiser of the largest and oldest international culinary art exhibition, the German Chefs' Association (Verband der Köche Deutschlands e.V.) intends to continue this cooperation in the coming years. "We’ve been working closely with the Stuttgart trade fair team for two years. What we‘ve achieved together with the IKA/Culinary Olympics is unique," emphasises Richard Beck, President of the German Chefs' Association. "All participating chefs and patissiers were enthusiastic about representing their country and their profession. Fans and visitors created a great atmosphere. For the follow-up events in 2024 and 2028 we want to repeat this sensational Culinary Olympics."
Until then, the team from Norway can celebrate the title of Olympic Champion of National Teams, the team from Sweden won the title for the Junior National Teams, and the team from Denmark won the competition in the Community Catering Teams category. The regional team Cercle des Chefs de Cuisine Lucerne from Switzerland won the IKA Cup.
“Innovation, emotion and passion”
In addition to culinary delights and gastronomic highlights, INTERGASTRA has a clear focus on the hotel industry. This has been actively supported by the DEHOGA Baden-Württemberg hotel and restaurant association for more than 50 years.
"INTERGASTRA 2020 has shown everything that makes our industry strong: Innovation, emotion and passion - but also the determination of many entrepreneurs to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the changing digital landscape,” underlines Fritz Engelhardt, Chairman of DEHOGA Baden-Württemberg. "The commitment of the exhibitors at the trade fair was again impressive and deserves the highest respect, and the solutions presented for our trade are encouraging for the future. The premiere of the IKA/Culinary Olympics was a special highlight: The international spirit of this top-class competition stands for the cosmopolitanism of our industry and is a real enrichment for INTERGASTRA." Klaus Vollmer, state guild master of the Baden-Württemberg Confectioners' Association, can only agree with this thoroughly positive assessment. "For us, the fair was another complete success. This is due in particular to the clever combination of the topics of coffee and confectionery, providing confectioners with a whole host of new ideas and inspiration for their daily work."
The GELATISSIMO ice cream trade fair, which took place parallel to INTERGASTRA, was also well attended and presented a top-class range of products from renowned exhibitors. The live workshops with ice cream masters from Europe and competitions, such as the Grand Prix GELATISSIMO and the Intercoppa, were particularly well received by visitors to the specialist trade fair. Rocco Niro, Marketing and Communication Manager at the Italian raw materials supplier Elenka, emphasised the importance of the trade fair: "For us, GELATISSIMO is the most important fair for the German-speaking market. The importance of the Stuttgart trade fair is increasing each time. More and more trade visitors prefer to come to Stuttgart than to Rimini and meet us here for technical discussions and an exchange of ideas. We are very satisfied again this year and will be back next time.”
The current survey results also show that the range of products and services offered at the two trade fairs was convincing. On average, the trade visitors rated the event with a top mark of 1.7. The fair recorded a new visitor share of 42 percent. While 87 percent would recommend it to others, 79 percent already stated that they would come back to Stuttgart for the next INTERGASTRA. With a decision-maker share of over 72 percent, the trade fair once again set new benchmarks. More than half of the visitors (51 percent) confirmed that INTERGASTRA is becoming increasingly important for the industry. The next INTERGASTRA will take place from 19 to 23 February 2022.
