CMT 2021 is postponed
"We didn't take this decision easily! In view of the latest corona developments, the decision taken in coordination with our trade fair partners for postponement was unavoidable," said Roland Bleinroth, President of Messe Stuttgart. At the time the decision was taken, CMT 2021 was very well booked with exhibitors from over 100 countries. Nevertheless, the world's biggest consumer show for tourism and leisure will not take place as planned in January 2021, as the necessary planning certainty for all involved is lacking for that date. At the same time, Bleinroth emphasised that the CMT team is already working on an alternative CMT concept for a date in late spring or the summer. Bleinroth: "We want to provide this important market platform for the tourism and caravaning sector at a time when safe implementation is guaranteed."
"In recent weeks, we have received so much support and appreciation from our exhibitors and partners," explains Guido von Vacano, member of the Board of Management. "The registration numbers were – despite individual cancellations – very good, in some areas we even had a waiting list. We had an approved safety and hygiene concept and our colleagues were working tirelessly for the trade fair."
Exhibitors need planning certainty
Nevertheless, with a heavy heart the decision was taken for the timely cancellation of the world's biggest consumer show for tourism and leisure: "We need planning security for our exhibitors and partners," said Vacano. "With each day a trade fair approaches, costs are incurred for all involved.
The worst-case scenario is cancellation just before the start of a trade fair. Unfortunately, the risk of such a scenario arising for CMT in January 2021 had strongly increased with the latest developments."
Against the background of the current developments in the corona pandemic, planning certainty for the coming months was no longer guaranteed: Worldwide travel restrictions, the discussion about accommodation bans, an increase in infection numbers and new risk areas in all of Germany, trade fair and event cancellations at short notice, as well as public appeals to avoid gatherings of people, ultimately caused those responsible at Messe Stuttgart to make their decision.
Von Vacano: "We promised our exhibitors that we would watch the situation closely and reassess it as necessary. We have now done so – sufficiently in advance of the trade fair, which is necessary for all involved in order to at least minimise the resulting damage. We are now also working intensively and in close coordination with our long-term partners on a viable replacement scenario."
At the same time, those responsible decided for the same reasons to cancel Touristik & Caravaning in Leipzig (18 – 22 November 2020), which is organised by Messe Stuttgart.
The trade fairs at a glance
CMT is the world's largest consumer show for tourism and leisure. In January 2020, it counted around 300,000 visitors and 2161 exhibitors on a total of nine trade fair days. This was thus the most successful trade fair in its history of over 50 years. Touristik & Caravaning (TC) Leipzig is central Germany's biggest travel trade fair. It is organised by Messe Stuttgart. In November 2019, 67,000 visitors and 531 exhibitors came to the Leipzig Trade Fair Centre.
