Fuel and Electrolysis Cells are assemblies which consist of different layers. Multiple processes at different time scales take place under operation. DC characteristics only show the sum of all processes. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) on the other hand allows investigating individual processes and helps to reveal the different shares of the processes to the DC current/potential behavior.

EIS is a non-destructive measurement technique which can be applied ex-situ and in-situ on either cell components or even entire systems. Systematic measurement strategies can for instance reveal bad water management or degradation effects at the catalysts or the membrane.
