More space for company founders06.02.2019 - 23:00
On 1 February 2019, the L-Bank Forum (Hall 1) of Messe Stuttgart became the venue for the second Start-up BW Summit organised by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Housing Baden-Württemberg. Over a 25,000 m2 exhibition space, approximately 380 start-ups from all over the country, including international partner regions, presented their business ideas in search of investors, customers and cooperation partners. A further 200 network partners from consulting, promotion and technology transfer, as well as 400 B2B partners from large corporations and the SME sector were also represented. As Minister of Economic Affairs Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut explained, the aim behind the state initiative is to “improve the attractiveness and international awareness of Baden-Württemberg as a base for
start-ups”. For 2019, the state partnered with the country of Israel, internationally renowned as a paradise for start-ups and for providing exemplary support to new businesses. With 16 partner regions, predominantly from Europe, but also from Brazil, China, India, Russia and the USA, the Start-up BW Summit 2019 has a significantly more international flavour than its first appearance in 2017.
Good transport links integral to the choice of location
The location of Messe Stuttgart, situated between Stuttgart Airport and the A8 motorway, which connects Frankfurt and Munich, proved ideal for facilitating a more international event. All participants were guaranteed simple, fast, time-saving and thus cost-effective arrival and departure.
Those unable to attend in person had the opportunity to follow the press conference via live stream, as well as to follow the opening event on the internet.
To help visitor navigation, the start-ups were distributed over ten regional ecosystems in the form of islands. Baden-Württemberg was represented on an eleventh island, together with institutions that provide support and funding nationwide. There was also a Wild Card island for start-ups that could not be assigned to a specific economic island. Finally, there was a 13th island, representing an international island at which partner country Israel was also represented. The main supporters of the Start up BW Summit, such as Daimler, ENBW, DEHOGA and others, also had their own booths. In the gallery, food truck start-ups provided new catering inspirations, adding a further start-up-related element to the event.
Four stages at the heart of the exhibition thanks to sophisticated sound technology
Over four stages, one main and three auxiliary stages, distributed throughout the L-Bank Forum, general talks were given by well-known speakers such as Winfried Kretschmann, Minister President of the State of Baden-Württemberg; Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister for Economic Affairs, Labour and Housing of the State of Baden-Württemberg; Dr. Auma Obama, founder and chairman of the Auma Obama Foundation / Kenya and Anna Alex, founder and board member of men’s fashion start-up Outfittery. When a presentation was taking place on the main stage, no other talks were given at the same time on any of the other stages. The three auxiliary stages were for side-programmes, talks and pitches from start-ups. To ensure that the sound on the four stages was kept under control in the hall, a sophisticated sound system was installed with loudspeakers that could provide selective audio. In addition, around 1,000 headsets were handed out to visitors, allowing selected talks on any of the stages to be followed from any location in the L-Bank Forum.
“We are delighted to have provided the ideal venue for such a future-oriented topic as start-ups,” explains Stefan Lohnert, Vice President of Guest Events at Messe Stuttgart. Messe Stuttgart had been greatly involved in implementation of the first ever Start-up BW Summit in 2017. Business Development and Guest Events devoted their many years of experience into supporting the planning and design of the event in a number of ways. The resulting booth construction plan was realised by service partner M&S Messebau.
At the time, the exhibition extended over an area of 10,500 m2, thus covering the entire hall 5. Today, two years later, the utilised exhibition space has doubled in size. The pulsmacher agency from Ludwigsburg, which was this year responsible for delivering the Start-up BW Summit, was able to build on the original concept from 2017 and develop it even further.
A special trade fair app made it easier for the participants of the Start-up BW Summit 2019 to register for the event as well as helping them connect with potential investors or other interested parties. It also included a map of the exhibition grounds, an interactive hall plan and a list of exhibitors. Messe Stuttgart supplied all the information required for the app.
Messe Stuttgart presents Fair-View – innovative software for event organisers
Not only did Messe Stuttgart provide the venue for the Start-up BW Summit, it also attended the event as an exhibitor with its own booth. “We showcased Fair-View, the prototype of an innovative software solution for easier and more transparent trade fair planning for exhibitors worldwide. Fair-View
supports the exhibition preparation process, from budgeting to hotel planning in just one tool. Endless Excel lists are a thing of the past,” explains Patrick Dehner, product development project manager at Messe Stuttgart. This clearly demonstrates that Messe Stuttgart understands the needs of its customers and wants to offer them practical support. Messe Stuttgart has long been a supporter of start-ups and offers shared booths at numerous trade fairs, most recently at the CMT. Messe Stuttgart has developed dedicated start-up offers (“Newcome”) for 14 trade fairs to date. Further trade fairs will follow, depending on the specific requirements of each industry.
In the venture capital and corporate lounge, investors and potential lenders were provided with conference boxes to share business concepts. Representatives from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Messe Stuttgart Business Development were available at all times.
A further highlight was the evening event in the gallery of the L-Bank Forum, sponsored by the hall's namesake L-Bank, which gave exhibitors and visitors a further networking opportunity. A DJ provided the atmosphere. And in an area reminiscent of Speakers Corner in London, braver founders also had the opportunity to pitch their start-up to the audience on the ad hoc pitch stage.
The next Start-up BW Summit will take place in 2020 again on the grounds of Messe Stuttgart.
