India is the second most important market for German mechanical engineering in Asia. Exports of machinery have developed well in recent years. The Indian mechanical and plant engineering industry is benefiting from the growing dynamism in the industry. Indian machine builders mostly serve the lower to middle price segment. India remains heavily dependent on imports for technologically sophisticated machinery and equipment.

With China, the USA, Japan and Italy, Germany is one of the most important reference countries. The balance for the German mechanical engineering industry in 2017 was positive. Deliveries to India increased by 4% compared with the previous year. In total, machinery and equipment worth more than €3 billion was delivered. The year 2018 also got off to a good start with an increase in deliveries of 3.7% in the first quarter.
