Mini-anniversary boasts new records
Messe Stuttgart sets new record for total earnings in its tenth year of operation at the new trade fair grounds / Figure reaches 28 million Euro
Messe Stuttgart is starting its tenth year of operations at its new trade fair grounds. The company has marked this mini-anniversary by setting new records: Landesmesse Stuttgart GmbH generated 147 million Euro in 2016 and thus the highest total return in the history of the company. There have never been so many exhibitors in Stuttgart (21,718) and never have the trade fair grounds been used so intensely (hall turnover factor 15.7). Customer satisfaction was high and the number of international visitors peaked – to 23 percent for exhibitors.
“Since our move to the new trade fair grounds, we have doubled sales and quadrupled profit performance. An extraordinary development,” explained Ulrich Kromer von Baerle, CEO, when presenting the preliminary results. “2016 was also one of the most profitable years in the history of our company,” he continued. Messe Stuttgart is anticipating a figure to the tune of 28 million Euro, before rent and tax.
Key contributors to last year's success included flagship events such as the machine tool event AMB, the world's largest consumer show for recreation and tourism CMT, the hospitality get-together INTERGASTRA, the most important trendsetting trade fair for bakery and confectionery südback, the spring-time and autumn (MesseHerbst) consumer shows, as well as the many successfully positioned new products. “The pop-culture event Comic Con enjoyed immediate success with around 50,000 comic book, television series and games fans attending. A super start,” concluded President Roland Bleinroth. Another new consumer show also proved to be very popular: Autotage Stuttgart. Taking place together with MesseHerbst, more than 180,000 visitors came to the event. Other success stories involved guest events, such as Pest-Protect, an international trade fair for pest control, and Hall of Vape, for fans of e-cigarettes, e-pipes & accessories.
Altogether, 68 trade fairs were held on the grounds of Messe Stuttgart (compared to 57 the previous year). More than 1.35 million visitors attended the events in the trade fair halls and in the International Congress Centre, with 106,000 coming from abroad. 20 events were held by Messe Stuttgart at other locations, 17 of these outside Germany.
Europe's most modern trade fair and congress centre is also an attractive venue for company events or for other types of events.
With 123 events (117 in 2015), the ICS International Congress Center Stuttgart was occupied for 236 days of the year (212 in 2015). New events were also added to the ICS portfolio, among them the annual conference of the German Association for Gynaecology and Obstetrics with more than 5,000 congress participants.
New international products made an impression
Also driving growth in 2016 was international trade. Messe Stuttgart is represented in 51 countries. The company organises 17 of its own events abroad. Two very popular launches included R+T in Brazil (in cooperation with Messe Nürnberg) and AMB in Iran. With 52 exhibitors, the world's leading trade fair for roller shutters, doors/gates and sun protection systems and the first R+T to be held in South America, was completely sold out.
“Following the launch of the R+T brand in Brazil, we are expecting significant growth for R+T Stuttgart in 2018 in terms of visitors and exhibitors coming to Germany from this region,” explains Roland Bleinroth. AMB Iran, a joint event by Messe Stuttgart and the German Machine Tool Builders' Association (VDW), saw 111 exhibitors from 12 countries attend Boostan Goftegoo´s Exhibition Center in Teheran. The exhibiting companies were aiming to strengthen existing ties and make new contact with trade partners and representatives. “We were impressed with the market in Iran and believe it has potential. AMB Iran will thus be taking place in May 2017 in Teheran's newly opened trade fair grounds, the Shahr-e-Aftab Complex, with considerably more exhibition space,” explained Ulrich Kromer.
Outlook for 2017
Ulrich Kromer and Roland Bleinroth used the annual press conference to herald an exciting year ahead for Messe Stuttgart: didacta, the trade fair for education and training, will be returning to Stuttgart after a three year absence. Before this, also in February, the motorcycle event MOTORRAD live will be coming to Stuttgart's trade fair halls. Another new event will be launched in October: in 2017, Stuttgart will become the global capital of electromobility and from 9 to 11 October 2017, the EVS30 “International Electric Vehicle Symposium & Exhibition” will be taking place in Stuttgart. Starting in 1969 as a scientific forum for the global exchange of new technology, the event has become a central meeting point for the entire electromobility industry. EVS attracts thousands of trade fair and symposium visitors from all over the world each year, all looking to find out more about the latest technologies and developments. The location for the event rotates annually between North America, Europe and Asia.
Many of the big international events will be absent from Stuttgart in 2017. “Because of how the events rotate, 2017 will be making less of an impact,” explained Roland Bleinroth. “However, 2018 will be a very strong year, when we are looking to generate more than 150 million Euro overall.” And with 14,600 square metres, there will be more exhibition space. Construction of the new Paul Horn Hall (Hall 10) is progressing, in terms of time and budget, as planned.
“We will be opening the hall at the start of 2018 with CMT,” says Ulrich Kromer.
