First congress for pneumologists in Messe Stuttgart’s ICS

Top-class training for pneumologists in one convenient location – event organisers impressed by transport logistics and venue

A first for Messe Stuttgart’s ICS International Congress Center Stuttgart: the
German Respiratory Society (DGP) held its 58th annual congress in the flexible
facilities of the ICS, which offer lots of natural light and are situated right next to
Stuttgart Airport. Some 3,500 participants attended this national conference for
pneumologists, which provided comprehensive information on respiratory
medicine in the form of presentations, seminars, symposia and posters.

The event focused on the entire spectrum of lung diseases, their treatment, as well
as a wide variety of preventative measures. Key topics included highlights of
successful research into immunotherapy for lung cancer, improved emergency
pulmonological care, measures aimed at facilitating ventilator weaning for intensive
care patients, and the health effects of air pollutants. In connection with the final
topic, the findings of the European research project ESCAPE (European Study of
Cohorts for Air Pollution Effects) were presented. This provided valuable insight
into the impact of particulates on health – an issue that has occupied Stuttgart and
other cities for a number of years. Cigarette smoking remains a considerably
greater threat to pulmonary health. The experts are calling on the government to
take additional tobacco prevention measures and to support smokers with
professional stop-smoking programmes.

In addition, more than 100 exhibitors showcased their latest developments in
pharmacy and medical devices for diseases of the lungs and respiratory tract in
Hall C2 of the ICS. Highly regarded German associations, foundations and
research institutes were also represented. In the Eastern Entrance, directly
adjoining the ICS, there was an exhibition of posters presenting the latest
developments in respiratory medicine. Catering for congress visitors was also
provided here. This meant everything was conveniently located for visitors, who
could access a wealth of information without having to walk long distances.

The choice of Messe Stuttgart’s ICS as the venue was no accident. “Located just a
three-minute walk from the airport, the ICS offers ideal conditions for the arrival and
departure of speakers and participants,” said Professor Martin Hetzel, one of the
DGP congress presidents. “Stuttgart, and this conference venue in particular, are
home to quality, progress and economic efficiency – the central topics of our
congress,” adds second congress president Professor Martin Kohlhäufl.

“Another argument in favour of the location is the wide and varied cultural
programme of the state capital Stuttgart, which the event organisers take advantage
of to give visitors opportunities to network in a relaxed atmosphere after the official
congress,” explains Stefan Lohnert, Vice President, Guest Events at Messe
Stuttgart.

Information:
Ease of access, size and versatility: That’s what sets Messe Stuttgart apart. The
location of the sustainably constructed trade fair and congress centre alongside
Stuttgart Airport, with its direct links to the A 8 motorway and public transport offers
perfect conditions for getting to and from the site. Event organisers benefit from the
wide range of usage options provided by the 105,200 square metres of hall space,
40,000 square metres of open-air grounds and 33 multi-functional rooms in the
adjoining ICS International Congress Center Stuttgart. That alone offers space for
up to 10,000 visitors. Consequently, these facilities enable several events to be
staged simultaneously. With this infrastructure, Messe Stuttgart and the ICS have
developed into internationally acclaimed locations for top-class trade fairs,
congresses, conferences, as well as corporate functions and events of all kinds.

From 2018, an additional exhibition hall will increase the available hall space to
120,000 m².
